Winner Take All was my first project for North Carolina publisher Harlan Publishing, in 1999. The company was actually a start-up by the author of the book in order to publish himself. The author had a vague idea of how he wanted it to look- i.e., dark cityscape, menacing eyes in the sky looking down on the hero of the story, a law enforcement agent with his weapon out. Given the low budget for this project, several of the elements came from the Web. The hero's head and the city skylines were all downloaded. The hero's body and the menacing eyes were photographs of people I knew.
